New Album: Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost
“I’M RELEASING A NEW ALBUM!!! Woohooooo. This is definitely the most excited about any album I’ve released — I know I say that every time, but I really do mean it.
The title of the album is one of my favourite Tolkien quotes: ‘Not all those who wander are lost’, which might give you a little clue what is on the album… yes, you guessed it: my new Lord of the Rings Organ Symphony!
This is the biggest project I’ve ever worked on — the whole symphony is 38 minutes long — and it has taken up most of my last year. I wrote the symphony while touring, premiering new movements in each place as I wrote them, and so I feel like it has absorbed a little bit of the cities I’ve visited this year. It has been amazing to work with Howard Shore and his team to bring this amazing music to life on the organ, and it has completely transformed how I think about the instrument. Alongside Lord of the Rings, it also includes my other biggest transcription project: my Suite from Pirates of the Caribbean — this has been some of my favourite music since I was a teenager, and I absolutely adore playing it. There might be a couple of other treats on there too!
The album was recorded on the organ of Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim where I recorded my last organ album, Firedove. It was VERY cold while we were there, but it’s such an incredible instrument — a Steinmeyer organ — and there is always something magical about the surroundings of the ancient Cathedral. It was particularly magical this time as we were treated to the Northern Lights on our last day of recording, so the whole recording team climbed the Cathedral tower to watch them for about an hour. Huge thanks to my producer, Jakob, and engineer Mike (and Mike’s son, Ashley!) for all their magic to capture the sound of this space so beautifully.
The full album is going to be released on the 13th November, but you can already listen to the first two tracks: the Prologue and the Shire from Lord of the Rings. I hope this gives you a little sense of the journey this album takes us on — to Middle Earth and back again. I am honestly bursting with excitement to share this with you, and I really hope you like it!”
