“I have been meaning to write an arrangement of John Powell’s ‘Romantic Flight’ for a couple of years, but it never felt like the right time to do it. Occasionally, I find an organ so inspiring that arrangements just seem to write themselves – this is what happened with this arrangement, written during one of my late-night practice sessions in Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim. I didn’t intend to write it, but inspiration suddenly struck towards the end of the session, and an hour later this arrangement was born. I performed it at my concert the next day, dedicating it to Markus and Anniken – they had sent me a message on social media, telling me how they had used my arrangement of Cornfield Chase as their exit music at their wedding in Nidaros Cathedral and were coming to my concert that evening. I wanted to write this for them as a wedding gift! It’s written to work as a pairing with my arrangement of ‘Test Drive’ – if performing them as a pair, just hold the final D of Romantic Flight, segueing into Test Drive and keeping the D sustained through the first bar. N.B. The piece begins with the melody in the pedals on a 2′ flute. If this isn’t possible on your organ, I recommend using a 4′ flute and then putting the manuals down the octave for the first 12 bars!” – Anna Lapwood
