There is a beautiful nostalgia about Harry Gregson-Williams’ soundtracks to the Narnia films. His orchestration and melodic writing always take me straight back to my childhood and seeing these films for the first time, so I’ve tried to capture a little of that feeling in this short medley, bringing together two of my favourite cues from the soundtrack to the first film. We begin with ‘Only the Beginning of the Adventure’, heard towards the end of the film during the coronation scene. This transitions into ‘The Battle’; the climax of the film where the two armies take their stand against each other.

A couple of performance notes! In general, this music should always be flowing, with a sense of perpetually rolling forwards. From bar 17, enjoy the constant interplay between the 6/8 and the 3/4. From bar 34, the melody should always flow in two, and should be shared between the hands, with the right hand jumping to a second manual for the flourishes in bars 34, 35, 38 and 39. I tend to take the last two notes of each bar in the right hand, but feel free to find a way to share it between the two hands that works for you! From bar 42, the left hand should create a gently rippling effect, sustaining the chords throughout the bar and just gently restriking the notes.
